Position Overview

Our client specializes in non-invasive, real-time imaging solutions for health care applications that provide transformative information to wound care practitioners to aid in their clinical decision-making.

The role of a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is crucial for ensuring the adoption of our client’s imaging devices. Overall, the CMO serves as a medical leader, ensuring that the company’s products and service offering align with medical standards, regulations, and current and emerging customer and market needs. They will play a critical role in driving adoption, innovation, education, thought-leadership and quality improvement in the field of wound care. Reporting to the CEO, the CMO will be responsible for overseeing and managing critical areas such as reimbursement, technology adoption, clinical evidence development, key opinion leader (KOL) management, and providing sales support at the C-suite level. The CMO expertise and strategic guidance will be instrumental in driving the success of our company in the wound care industry. The CMO has 2 direct reports and is matrixed across all functional groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Immediate Areas of Focus:
    • Reimbursement:
      • Develop and implement reimbursement strategies to optimize market access and
        maximize reimbursement for our products and services.
      • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and address reimbursement
        challenges and opportunities, ensuring the availability and affordability of our
        offerings.
      • Direct reimbursement consultants and KOLs to achieve maximum coverage for
        our client’s procedures by Medicare/Medicaid and Private Payors.
      • Develop publication materials to support evidence required by the Payors.
      • Stay abreast of evolving reimbursement policies, regulations, and guidelines to
        guide the organization’s decision-making processes.
      • Execute strategy to achieve Category I coverage for the client’s procedure
        at a commercially viable reimbursement rate.
    • Fostering Technology Adoption:
      • Lead efforts to drive the adoption of our client’s technology in all segments of
        the Wound Care market.
      • Keep abreast of emerging and competitive technologies, assessing their impact
        on our client, and implementing strategies to counter any threats.
      • Speak publicly at leading industry events/conferences building the clinical and
        public profile of our client and its benefit.
    • Sales and Commercial Support:
      • Act as a medical liaison with key stakeholders at the C-suite level, including
        executives, physicians, payors, and healthcare providers, to understand their
        needs, address concerns, and provide strategic guidance.
      • Enable IDN-wide sales and commercial opportunities by working through Chief
        Medical officers and other “c-level” executives at partner organizations.
      • Support sales teams by providing medical expertise, clinical evidence, and
        guidance in the development of sales materials, presentations, and training
        programs.
      • Support Global Distributors as necessary.
    • Investor Relations:
      • Act as key subject matter expert in Investor presentations describing the clinical
        market opportunity, the growing body of evidence and the evolving
        reimbursement pathway.
  • Other Areas to Focus:
    • Publications and Medical Communications
      • The CMO will develop and execute a publishing schedule to harvest existing and
        new trial data to publish new publications that support existing and new
        applications for our client.
      • The CMO will manage and direct the Medical Communications team (2). In
        addition to developing new manuscripts, they will also develop speaker
        presentations, webinar content, marketing and communications collaterals, etc.
      • The CMO will develop key abstracts and posters for leading wound care
        conferences.
  • Strategic Planning:
    • The CMO will be a member of the executive team. The management team in
      conjunction with the CEO is responsible for developing and implementing the
      strategic vision for the company. The role of the executive team is to set goals,
      define the company’s mission, and establish and successfully execute strategies
      to achieve business objectives in the field of wound care.
  • Clinical Leadership:
    • As a medical expert, the CMO provides clinical leadership and expertise to guide
      the development and evaluation of our client’s products.
    • The CMO will stay up to date with the latest medical research, advancements,
      and best practices in wound care management to ensure the company’s offerings
      fit into the most efficient workflow and becomes the standard of care.
  • Guidelines:
    • The CMO will lead efforts to secure our client’s inclusion in Guidelines
      (international and national) in all applicable areas of wound care.
  • Product Development and Evaluation:
    • The CMO collaborates with research and development teams to identify and
      prioritize wound care products and partnership opportunities.
    • The CMO provides medical insights and guidance throughout the product
      development lifecycle, including clinical workflow/used cases, clinical trials,
      regulatory compliance, and product labeling.
  • Medical Education and Training:
    • The CMO plays a key role in providing education and training to healthcare
      professionals, sales teams, and customers regarding our client’s Imaging
      Systems, workflow, outcomes, cost efficiencies and treatment protocols.
    • The CMO will develop educational materials, participate in medical conferences,
      and conduct training sessions to enhance product knowledge and promote best
      practices in wound care using our client’s Imaging Systems
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • In collaboration with the regulatory affairs team, the CMO ensures that all
      technologies and services comply with relevant regulations and guidelines set
      forth by regulatory bodies.
    • They participate in regulatory submissions, reviews, and inspections to maintain
      compliance and patient safety.
  • Key Opinion Leader Engagement:
    • The CMO establishes and maintains relationships with key opinion leaders in the
      wound care field, such as renowned clinicians, researchers, and academics. They
      collaborate with these experts to gather insights, gain endorsements for products,
      and contribute to the advancement of wound care knowledge.
    • The CMO manages the Clinical Advisory committee.
  • Quality Improvement:
    • The Medical Director works closely with the quality assurance and improvement
      teams to monitor and improve the quality of wound care products and services.
      They analyze clinical outcomes, customer feedback, and adverse event reports to
      identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed.

Key Requirements

  • Medical Doctor (MD) degree with experience in Wound Care. Board certification is preferred.
  • Proven experience in reimbursement strategy development and implementation, technology adoption, clinical evidence generation, and KOL management within the healthcare industry.
  • Experience within wound care would be preferrable but not required.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare reimbursement landscape, policies, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated experience working at the C-suite level administrators, providing strategic guidance and influencing decision-making processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams and build relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex medical and scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of medical advancements, research, and market trends in the relevant therapeutic areas.
  • Must be a self-starter who excels at multitasking and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize and shift workload to meet deadlines.
